Empowering Youth

Reflections on the youth-NGO panel

Today’s panels dealt with the topic of how to promote youth participation and individual and organized citizenship. On the morning panel podium, representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) had the possibility to explain their organizations´ aims and point of view. The podium was international and, surprisingly, female-dominated. Barbara IRVING, Jennifer DOWLING and Kaburo KOBIA shared it with Aturo ROMBOLI, the only male participant. As to speaking time, he almost outbalanced the women.

One of the keywords of the panel, stressed by all participants, was “empowering” youth. This term can be filled with several meanings such as providing information or enforce endeavours to non-formal education. Non-formal education is, according to Kaburo KOBIA, the most puissant way to empower young people. NGOs all over the world supply various possibilities for young people to gain self belief and responsibility, to broaden their horizons and to share ideas.
