“JEF a changé ma vie!”

December 16, 2006

Some of the participants might have wondered who the competent, friendly young woman is, who seems to have an answer to any question and a nice smile for everyone.

Steady as a rock and absolutely stress-resistant, Anne FAVRE even finds the time to answer some questions for this blog before she hurries away to do some troubleshooting somewhere at ICNYP-conference.

Anne is only 24, so more than ten years younger than the average age at this conference, but she is in charge of everything at this conference. Six months ago, she started organizing ICNYP 2006 during an internship at JEF in a team with Günter LINDNER.

“It needs a capable team to organize a conference like that. Günter is really great, he knows his job well. I could not have done it without him. But the Federal Ministry of Social Security, Generations and Consumer Protection was a very efficient cooperation partner in the run-up of the conference just as well.” states Anne.

[The translation for the (only halfway) ironic statement in the title would be :"JEF changed my life!"]

Awards

The guy in the background of this photo is Roland ULBRICHT, one of the many hard-working JEF people behind the scenes. [I want to use this post as well as an apology. We simply could not write about everybody or post a pic. Hope you understand.]

Piled in front of Roland the awards that each all participant recieved during a nice ceremony on Wednesday. Many people. Many awards. High pile.

To highlight the importance of the ICNYP-conference, Mr. Karl DOUTLIK, head of the Permanent Representation of the European Commission in Austria, delivered a speech during the last plenary session Thursday morning.

Although short of time, DOUTLIK emphasised the importance of youth policies. “Improvement starts with involving the youth!” Moreover, he praised JEF to be a strong and reliable partner whenever it comes to youth-affairs and topics related to the EU.

Thank you for your visit!

Somebody’s book of demands

December 13, 2006

Hey! We’ve got something to say!

Me too.

I am aware that the presentation attached is a compilation of quotations, a presentation that aims to show young people’s commitment to shaping the world in their interest. I am honestly grateful for Mr. Bruveris’ contribution in Monday afternoon’s panel, which I perceive to be one of the best presentations – especially in terms of intelligibility.

But let me inform you about some conversations I had during the last days, of which the content of the ppp-presentation reminds me. Maybe I am not a representative youth, but I am a youth – at least according to the relevant definitions. Like so many others in my age I don’t feel like a youth. Why so? Maybe it is due to my profound aversion to platitudes. Maybe its due to the fact that I don’t share the interests, the skills, the economic/social/religious background etc. of everybody of my generation. These differences make everybody unique. Therefore: Youth representatives of the world, I appreciate your efforts, but please respect that a youth is not a youth is not automatically a youth. Nobody is entitled to speak on somebodyelse’s behalf only because he/she represents a certain age class in a given political/social forum.

Thank you for your attention.

Learning is not monolithic

December 13, 2006

In her keynote, Lynne CHISHOLM outlined the problem that formal and non-formal / informal learning are often looked upon as rival concepts. “Learning is not monolithic. There are many different varieties of learning.” states Chisholm.

In order to distinguish between the different concepts of learning, one has to ask some key questions: Who is learning? Where? What? and How? By linking the answers to these questions, one finds out about what kind of learning occurs.

Chisholms presentation (ppt 443KB) provides further information.

Unheared Voices Story

December 13, 2006

A recently released children’s opinion poll sampled 531 children aged between 9-17 years old in four key urban and rural locations in Somalia and is the first of its kind in a country that has known no peace for close to 16 years.

The poll samples an interesting variety of influences, hopes, dreams and expectations of the young people concerning both their own and their country’s future.

This poll was the very first possibility since the collapse of governance in Somalia that Somali children have spoken about their dreams and aspirations.
The question is “Who will listen to these emerging voices?” Please read through the results of the study (pdf 19KB) to make these voices heard!
